Understanding priority registration

What is the priority registration period?

Each spring and fall semester, all students at Tulane have the opportunity to register for classes for the upcoming semester(s).

  • In early November, students typically begin registering for classes for the upcoming spring and summer semesters.

  • In late March/early April, students begin registering for classes for the upcoming fall semester.

The priority registration period is usually 2-3 weeks long and is when the bulk of active students register for their courses.

  • The MD doctoral students, and a few other graduate level programs register their students themselves, however the vast majority of undergraduate and graduate students at Tulane self-register during this period.

  • The priority registration period is the start of the overall ‘registration’ period for the next semester that concludes with the last day a student can self-register for classes.

Time tickets

During the priority registration period, all students that self-register are assigned a time ticket which tells the student on which date and time they can submit their registration.

Time ticket assignments

Student time tickets are calculated based on earned credit hour and student level (either GR or UG).

  • Graduate students register first, then undergraduates in descending order based on how many earned credits the student has (so undergraduate students with the most earned credit hours register first, and undergraduate students with the least credit hours register last). How does the Registrar’s office support Academic Advising during the priority registration period?

During the priority registration period, the Office of the Registrar works closing with NTC Academic Advisors to assist their students with real-time registration support. Academic Advisors meet with students all day everyday during the registration period to assist them with registration. As a result:

  • We are ‘on-call’ to monitor incoming registration support requests in the Advising Teams Chat.

  • We also receive a high volume of tickets/emails from advisors during this time asking for assistance with supporting their students during registration.

The Registrar’s office also supports all other active students during the priority registration period as well.
